What has happened to American Culture? Last night I was looking forward to watching the US Hockey team take on legendary Team Canada in the Winter Olympics and as I turned on NBC I see a couple dressed like they belong in the Nutcracker Sweet dancing around on the ice?
“Did I miss the first period and this was entertainment for the intermission?” But then another couple came on the ice and they look like they just left Studio 54 in New York circa 1978. “Where was the game? This is USA v. Canada in hockey; the biggest game since the 1980 Miracle on Ice.
After scrambling through the channels I found the game on MSNBC, a second rate news station. For the record it was one of the most exciting, intense, and action thrilled sporting events I had ever seen. Even bigger than my 5th grade basketball championship game when we, Nallwood, beat Indian Creek to take the title in Overland Park, Kansas in 1976!
So here in America,Ice dancing is bigger than one of the most anticipated matches in years. We have become a nation obsessed with reality TV and sunk so low. We care more about if Donnie and Marie Osmond can dance rather than two countries battling it out on ice. This was a slow creep on American starting with The Bachelor/Bachelorette and topping off this past year with Jersey Shore. What next, the Olympics will be hosted by Mike “The Situation” from Jersey Shore?
